Welcome Holiday's!

Welcome Holiday's!

The holidays are creeping up on our calendars, and with it comes so many chores! While the holiday season is all about having fun and spending time with people you love, it can be hard to enjoy when the list of things you have to do beforehand feels so overwhelming. It's hard to know where to begin when it comes to preparing your home for guests. The following details a few that are relatively quick and easy to get off that list.

1. Create a warm cozy space.

It's time to make your home feel warm and cozy with fall colors like browns, coppers, and subtle reds. Pre-holiday decorating with jewel tones, dark wood, heavy sculptured art pieces, metals or paintings. Breaking your winter decor out now will reduce the drama of last-minute decorating before the holidays.

2. Break out the bedding.

Colder months call for warmer blankets. If you anticipate hosting friends or family over the holiday season, it's time to start washing the bedding and blankets. If you've got quilts or duvets, it's time to put them to use and use them as your updated fall decor! Using a big, fluffy blanket as an accessory at the end of a bed serves as a cute decoration, and is practical for guests who may need it or perhaps to be used by your 4-legged family members who love to cozy up under a blanket.

3. Clean and reverse ceiling fans.

That's right, it's time. Shut off those ceiling fans and of course, give it a dusting. This can be a shocking task and can litter dust all over your floors, but it's an important part of keeping a clean home. Any guests with allergies will be grateful to stay in a clean, dust-free space. Also, remember to change the fan direction, per PNM Fall and Winter Energy Saving Tips, Ceiling fan direction in the winter should be switched to clockwise and be sure to set the fan at the lowest speed. This will allow the fan to pull cool air up toward the ceiling, which in turn displaces the warm air that rises and collects near the ceiling. This simple step can help with circulating the warmer air in the room and save you money on your electric bill.

4. Clean or replace furnace filters.

Another energy saving tip provided by PNM. Filters should be replaced or cleaned often, not only but especially in the the winter months. During those months we tend to hunker down in our homes with the windows and doors shut tight, not allowing any of the warm air out...remember this also blocks all of the stale, dirty air in with us. Trapped hair and dust on the filter can reduce the efficiency of your heating unit and cause it to work harder and cost more. Reduce the amount of circulating dust by changing those filters often. This will be beneficial for your pocketbook as well as any one in your family who suffer from allergies as well.
