How Often Should You Vacuum?

How Often Should You Vacuum?

The best way to care, maintain and extend the life of your carpets is to vacuum often and regularly. There are many things regular vacuuming does for your carpet including removing dirt, grime and all types of allergens. Dirt, sand and grime are very abrasive and if left on carpet, especially in the high traffic areas, they can cause permanent damage to the carpet fibers. The damage becomes visible, appearing dirty (or darker in color) in comparison to the surrounding carpet areas. According to the Carpet and Rug Institute,

"Vacuuming frequency is another vital aspect to remember in terms of carpet care as certain areas of carpet should be vacuumed more frequently than others. CRI recommends vacuuming daily in high-traffic or pet areas, twice weekly in medium-traffic areas, and weekly in light-traffic areas."

The value of vacuuming is also reinforced by Shaw Flooring, one of the largest carpet manufacturers in the world, states, "The most important step in caring for your carpet is vacuuming it thoroughly and frequently, particularly in high-traffic areas."

Protecting the look, feel and longevity of your carpet is a great reason to make vacuuming a regular practice but it isn't the only reason. Carpet acts as a large filter in your home. If you have seen the removal of old carpet and padding, you know that a lot of dirt has made its way through the carpet fibers and backing and padding. Acting as a filter is good as long as the filter is cleaned or removed on a regular basis. Removal of allergens such as pollen, dust, pet dander, etc., will improve air quality and may provide relief for those who suffer from allergies and asthma.
